Getting to the lake:

The boat launch on the southern end of the lake is the best place to put in, as there is plenty of parking and a sandy beach. It is also possible to put in at the public beach midway up the lake, but expect a longer haul to the beach.

The Paddle:

Long Lake is a good lake to get a nice paddle in. Due to its shape, it is fairly protected from the wind and doesn’t get too choppy. Once you get past the main part of the lake, you enter a calm, smaller section that comes as a nice breather. If you are feeling really ambitious, you can follow Rice Creek up a ways. You will most likely need to portage around a little damn. I’ve made it up the dam without portaging in a kayak but wouldn’t recommend it on a paddle board. Once around the dam, you will be completely surrounded by wildlife. It is truly a cool feeling being so close to the city and yet feeling so far away.

On a side note, if you are wanting to take one of your four-legged friends for a paddle, the boat launch is a great place to do so. During the evening there is little to no wake, and the gradual shoreline makes it easy to get your dog on the board.
