SUP on George Lake, Kandiyohi County
The facts: 231 Acres, Maximum Depth 34', Clarity 10'
Getting in the water:
George Lake is one of many lakes in Kandiyohi County near downtown Spicer, MN. We launched from our family owned cabin on the south side of the lake, right near County Road 9 and 42nd Street. This is naturally the quieter side of the lake as the trees from the outlet on the west side provide a shelter from the wind. The cabin is a mere 30 feet from the water and our waterfront runs about 15 feet wide so we had ample room to spread out before taking off. There is also a public access on the north side of George Lake that provides ample parking and room to launch multiple boards at once.
On the water:
The water was like glass for the most part allowing us to easily see straight to the bottom in areas at least 10 feet deep. This lake is tucked back from any major highways so both the noise level and cleanliness of the water are impeccable. Sara’s family was at the cabin to both enjoy the sun and try paddle boarding in a freshwater lake for the first time. Her mom, dad, brother, sister in-law and their two girls were excited to spend the day on the water trying to escape the 90 degree heat.
We did a number of tandem rides around the lake on the Paul Bunyan, Sara and her niece(s), Sara and her mom and practiced our balance, stability, and speed on the Norsemen.
Riding with two adults on the same board was easier than we thought but when a wind gust came up it made the paddle back somewhat of a challenging.
The whole family including the kids really enjoyed themselves but I think Sara’s dad had the most fun.
